The exercises on this page can be helpful in the recovery of movement and strength in your hand and wrist.
Such conditions include surgery for treating fractures around the hand, wrist and forearm.
Usually you may only be allowed by your surgeon to do movement exercises before 6 weeks, with a goal of achieving at least half of your usual movement in the first 2 weeks.
3 Crucial exercises to start early on are shown below, usually can be started immediately, if confirmed with your surgeon.
Turning your palm to face the ceiling, hold for 5-10 seconds, then back down facing the ground.
Repeat 5-10 times. 3 times a day
making a tight fist with your finger tips in your palm, hold for 10 seconds, then release and fully straighten.
Repeat in same fashion
and pressing your hands and fingertips together (like in a prayer pose) are crucial exercise early on.
No need to stretch the wrist back too much early on, but can gradually increase the backward wrist stretch during this pose as pain improves, especially after 2 weeks after the surgical wound has healed.
Gentle grip ball strengthening can start as early as it is comfortable.
After the 6 week review, you may be allowed to start some light strengthening exercises.
